Anti-roll bar link wear symptoms

Drop links contain ball joints at each end that wear and develop play. The symptoms are most noticeable over rough surfaces and when cornering.

• Knocking or rattling from the front suspension over bumps and potholes
• Clunking noise when turning at low speed into driveways or car parks
• Increased body roll in corners compared to when links were new
• Play visible when the link is grabbed and rocked by hand
• MOT advisory or failure for worn anti-roll bar link ball joints

Link replacement

Anti-roll bar links are one of the simplest suspension components to replace. They bolt between the strut and the anti-roll bar.

• Always replace links in pairs (both sides) for balanced handling
• Use a hex key in the ball joint stud to prevent it spinning while undoing the nut
• Apply copper grease to the threads and mounting faces to aid future removal
• Check the anti-roll bar bushes while the links are off — they often wear at a similar rate
