The clutch slave cylinder receives hydraulic pressure from the clutch master cylinder and pushes the clutch fork to disengage the clutch. A leaking slave cylinder causes a soft pedal, difficulty changing gears, and eventual clutch failure. External slave cylinders are bolted to the gearbox; concentric types sit inside the bellhousing.

Slave cylinder failures are usually caused by seal degradation. External cylinders leak visibly; concentric types leak into the bellhousing.
