Engine Oil Pump Buying Guide
Ultimo aggiornamento: 24 aprile 2026
The oil pump is the heart of the engine lubrication system, drawing oil from the sump and pressurising it throughout the oil galleries to every bearing, camshaft, and turbocharger in the engine. Low oil pressure caused by a failing oil pump leads to rapid bearing wear and, if left unchecked, catastrophic engine failure.
How an oil pump works
Most engines use a gear-type oil pump (either a spur gear pair or an internal/external rotor design) driven directly by the crankshaft or via a short chain. The meshing gears or rotors trap oil and carry it around the pump body from the inlet to the outlet port, building pressure in the process. A pressure relief valve limits maximum oil pressure to protect the filter and galleries from damage at high engine speeds.
Variable-geometry oil pumps, used in some modern engines, can regulate their output based on demand, reducing parasitic drag when full pressure is not needed and improving fuel economy.
Symptoms of oil pump failure
A low oil pressure warning light — the oil can warning lamp — is the most serious instrument panel warning in any vehicle. It should never be ignored. Oil pressure loss at idle, which recovers at higher revs, suggests a worn pump with insufficient displacement to maintain pressure at low speed. A persistent low oil pressure warning at normal operating temperature, with confirmed correct oil level, is a strong indication of pump failure.
A noisy engine (tapping, rattling, or knocking from the top end) accompanied by low oil pressure indicates the bearings and cam followers are being starved. If this condition is allowed to continue the engine will suffer bearing damage within a short time.
- Oil pressure warning light — stop immediately and investigate
- Oil pressure low at idle, recovers at higher revs
- Engine tapping or knocking with low pressure
- Oil pressure gauge reading below normal operating range
- Oil pump chain rattle on cold start
Replacement
Oil pump access typically requires significant engine disassembly — often removing the sump, timing cover, or both. This makes it a worthwhile job to combine with a timing belt or chain service when the engine is already partially stripped. Always prime the new pump with oil before starting the engine to avoid a dry-start period on first fire-up. Use the registration lookup for the correct pump for your engine code.
