Guida all'acquisto del volano motore

A flywheel is a heavy rotating disc bolted to the rear of the crankshaft that smooths out the power pulses from each cylinder firing, keeps the engine running between combustion events, and provides the ring gear that the starter motor engages on cranking. Browse our full flywheel range to find an exact-fit replacement for your vehicle by registration.

What a flywheel does

The flywheel stores kinetic energy during the power stroke and releases it steadily during the exhaust, intake, and compression strokes. This flywheel action is what allows a petrol or diesel engine to idle smoothly rather than lurching with every combustion event. On manual gearbox cars the flywheel also forms the friction surface that the clutch disc clamps against — so a scored or warped flywheel directly affects clutch engagement quality.

Dual-mass flywheels (DMF) add a spring-damper system between two plates to absorb drivetrain vibration. They are standard on many modern diesel vehicles and significantly reduce gearbox and transmission noise. A worn DMF typically causes a distinctive rattling noise at idle that changes pitch when the clutch is depressed.

Symptoms of a failing flywheel

Common warning signs include vibration through the clutch pedal, chattering or shuddering when pulling away, difficulty engaging gears smoothly, and an unusual scraping or knocking sound from the bellhousing. On dual-mass units a rattling noise at idle — sometimes described as a bag of bolts — is the most recognisable symptom.

If the ring gear teeth are damaged the starter motor may spin without catching, causing a grinding noise on start-up. This can also prevent the engine from starting at all if the damage is severe enough.

  • Vibration through clutch pedal at idle
  • Shudder or chatter when pulling away
  • Rattle at idle that changes with clutch pedal
  • Grinding noise when starting (worn ring gear)
  • Clutch slipping despite new clutch disc

Fitting and compatibility

Flywheel replacement is typically done alongside a full clutch kit. Machining a flywheel is possible where a solid unit shows minor scoring, but dual-mass units are always replaced outright — they cannot be resurfaced. Always check that the replacement flywheel matches your engine code and gearbox type, not just the make and model, as different trim levels can use different flywheels on the same platform.

Use the registration lookup on any product page to confirm fitment. Delivery on qualifying orders is free across the UK when you spend over £99, and you have 14 days to return any part that does not fit.

Domande frequenti

What are the symptoms of a failing flywheel?

Common symptoms include a rattling or knocking noise at idle, vibration through the clutch pedal, a burning smell, and difficulty changing gear or a slipping clutch. A failing dual mass flywheel often rattles when the engine is idling and the clutch is engaged.

What is a dual mass flywheel and why is it replaced with the clutch?

A dual mass flywheel uses two spring-connected sections to absorb engine vibration for smoother, quieter running. Because it sits behind the clutch and wears alongside it, it is usually inspected and often replaced at the same time as the clutch to avoid a second labour-heavy job later.

How do I find the right flywheel for my vehicle?

Flywheels are matched to the specific engine, gearbox, and clutch type, and many cars can take either a solid or dual mass design. Enter your registration above to see flywheels confirmed to fit your exact vehicle.

How much does a flywheel replacement cost?

The price of a flywheel depends on your exact vehicle and the brand you choose. Enter your registration above to see parts confirmed to fit, then compare prices from the brands we stock on this page. Free UK delivery on orders over £99.
