What a flywheel does
The flywheel stores kinetic energy during the power stroke and releases it steadily during the exhaust, intake, and compression strokes. This flywheel action is what allows a petrol or diesel engine to idle smoothly rather than lurching with every combustion event. On manual gearbox cars the flywheel also forms the friction surface that the clutch disc clamps against — so a scored or warped flywheel directly affects clutch engagement quality.
Dual-mass flywheels (DMF) add a spring-damper system between two plates to absorb drivetrain vibration. They are standard on many modern diesel vehicles and significantly reduce gearbox and transmission noise. A worn DMF typically causes a distinctive rattling noise at idle that changes pitch when the clutch is depressed.
Symptoms of a failing flywheel
Common warning signs include vibration through the clutch pedal, chattering or shuddering when pulling away, difficulty engaging gears smoothly, and an unusual scraping or knocking sound from the bellhousing. On dual-mass units a rattling noise at idle — sometimes described as a bag of bolts — is the most recognisable symptom.
If the ring gear teeth are damaged the starter motor may spin without catching, causing a grinding noise on start-up. This can also prevent the engine from starting at all if the damage is severe enough.
